Back to School Bash

OCJI hosted the 4th Annual Black August Back to School Bash at Pearson Park in Anaheim, California, to support and empower the youth of Orange County. The event provided 500 backpacks filled with school supplies, including pencils, pens, binders, and notebooks, with generous support from Karina's Backpack Project. Attendees received free haircuts, makeovers, and new sneakers to help them start the school year with confidence. BIPOC artists were featured, sharing canvas art and educating the youth on the importance of Black August, celebrating past leaders who fought for freedom. The event was a vibrant collaboration, made even more impactful through the partnership with the Tiyya Foundation, which brought its values of inclusion, empowerment, and economic advancement to the community.

Black History Month Is Every Month

Inform the college community and the overall O.C community of how often BHM is not promoted, and Inform the youth of the miseducation, and promote black joy with collective unity. Educate the community on active BIPOC organizations doing reputable work in the community. Give opportunities to speakers who can give the community BHM facts that they may not know about. Give students an opportunity to learn more about the miseducation of Black History by providing opportunity to network with NAACP, National Action Network, and other civil rights organizations. Demonstrate by providing a Divine 9 Step show on campus with different BSU’s involved. We will motivate by having different speakers from different Black organizations present historical facts on Black History, and the struggle to maintain education not only to the month of February, but every month thereafter.
